Tom Magnier spoke to Nick Luck as Super Seth moves from Waikato Stud to the Coolmore Australia stallion roster.

Here’s what Magnier had to say…
He’s a young stallion and has had an amazing start at stud, with four individual Group 1 winners, a champion two-year-old and two Australian Guineas winners.
The trajectory this stallion is on is something we’ve very rarely seen.
The Coolmore model, of course, is to stand our own stallions and very rarely have we gone out in search of stallions somewhere else.
We did it, though, with Encosta De Lago, who I think started off at just over A$8,000 at Blue Gum Farm and ended up standing at just over A$300,000 with us.
He was a multiple champion sire and became a very good broodmare sire, so we got lucky.
Obviously, we went out and bought Wootton Bassett too, who started at a low fee, and we know where he went up to. He was a very good stallion down here, and we’ve had a tough time losing him and So You Think.
Though there are some good stallions around Australia, we lost Snitzel and I Am Invincible has been magnificent but is getting on a little bit. So, it would be far to say there’s a probably a gap in the market for proven sires.
We’ve got Home Affairs, who’s a young horse. He could’ve had a Group 1 winner at the weekend and, though he didn’t, the signs are very promising.
St Mark’s Basilica is coming through the ranks and looks very positive. He’s a young horse too.
I guess, similar to what we did with Wootton Bassett, we’ve gone outside to see what else there is in the proven sire ranks.
Mark Chittick has Waikato Stud in New Zealand and has been standing many champion sires. There’s a family legacy there that’s very well known, so we went to look at Super Seth.
The team at the farm examined every angle of the stallion and he’s a very good-looking horse. We also looked at all the foals over there.
We sat down, started having a conversation with Mark, Pippa and Gary Chittick, and were able to come up with a deal that meant Super Seth coming here to Australia.
I think the future is very exciting with him, and I’m hoping the trajectories we got with Encosta De Lago and Wootton Bassett will happen again.
It’s massive for us and we’ll be sending him some of – if not most of – our best mares to Super Seth this coming season.
