Two Derby winners join Japan’s Dubai team
Japan: After finishing second in the Japan Cup, Shahryar is being prepared for another tilt at the Sheema Classic, in which he defeated Yibir in March.
Japan is assembling a formidable team for Dubai World Cup night on March 26 with Hong Kong Vase winner Win Marilyn set to challenge for the same G1 race.
Shahryar will be one of two Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) winners set to appear on the Meydan card with Do Deuce, who captured the Classic this year, likely to contest the Dubai Turf after a G2 warm-up in February as he makes his first start since the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Nature Strip conqueror Roch ’N’ Horse could travel to Royal Ascot
Australia: Roch ’N’ Horse, surprise conqueror of Nature Strip in the G1 Champions Sprint in November, could head to Royal Ascot next summer. The New Zealand-bred mare beat a field which also included recent Everest winner Giga Kick while recording her second win at G1 level at Flemington.
Trainer Mike Moroney told Racenet: "We'll look to give her a shot in England and head to Royal Ascot. She did beat Nature Strip and that horse obviously went great over there so I think she would have a good chance if we do end up going."
Dettori named on six horses at Santa Anita after day one treble
USA: Frankie Dettori has a chance to build on his brilliant start to his stay in California after being named on six mounts at Santa Anita on Frifday [Dec 30], the second day of the Santa Anita winter meet. He has four more on Saturday's card.
Dettori rode a treble on the opening day on Monday [Dec 26], highlighted by a G2 victory on Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammer, to mark the start of his farewell tour following the shock news that he will retire at the end of 2023.
With a crowd of more than 41,000 at the venue, the largest first-day attendance since 2016, Santa Anita reported a record handle in excess of $26m, up 35% on previous corresponding days.
Robbie Fradd retires to undergo triple heart bypass
Australia: Veteran jockey Robbie Fradd has announced his immediate retirement to undergo a triple heart bypass in the new year. Fradd, 58, has been based in Queensland since 2014 but has enjoyed big race success in his native South Africa, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong where he won the premiership in 2000-1.
Arlington Million finds new home at Colonial Downs
The Arlington Million will have a new home at Colonial Downs in Virginia after the move was approved by the American Graded Stakes Committee. The historic G1 race and the G1 Beverly D, which were run at Churchill Downs this year following the closure of Arlington Park, plus the G2 Secretariat Stakes will be staged on Aug 12.
