Dettori to ride Queen’s Plate winner Moira at Breeders’ Cup
Canada: Frankie Dettori has been booked to partner Queen’s Plate winner Moira in the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland on November 5.
On her latest start at Woodbine, the three-year-old filly was demoted from a fine second place in the G1 EP Taylor for causing interference. She is one of two Kevin Attard-trained runners to be ridden by Dettori, who will also ride Last Call in the Juvenile Fillies Turf for the Canadian trainer.
The 51-year-old Dettori, ranked fourth on the all-time Breeders’ Cup jockeys list by money won with $23m from 14 wins, will also partner leading European challenger Kinross in the Mile.
William Buick crowned champion jockey for the first time
GB: William Buick realised a long-held ambition when he was crowned champion jockey for the first time at a ceremony at Ascot on Saturday [Oct 15].
The Norwegian-born 34-year-old, #2 jockey on the TRC Global Rankings, dominated the championship from the outset and ended the campaign with 157 winners, 66 clear of his closest challengers Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand.
Godolphin star Anamoe set overseas targets in 2023
Australia: Six-time G1 winner Anamoe could head overseas next year with connections revealing plans to run the Godolphin star in the Dubai Turf in March and then head to Europe to race at Royal Ascot.
The James Cummings-trained colt is a warm favourite for the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley [Oct 22], in which he finished runner-up last year.
Soumillon reimburses trainer Beckett after elbow incident
France: Christophe Soumillon has paid a sum of €7278.74 ($7116.90) to trainer Ralph Beckett to cover the cost of him sending Captain Weirzba to Saint-Cloud for the G3 race in which the Belgian rider used his elbow to knock Rossa Ryan out of the saddle.
Soumillon received a 60-day ban for the offence and lost his job as the Aga Khan’s retained jockey.
Arch-rivals Verry Elleegant and Addeybb retired
France: Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant has been retired after an ill-starred European campaign which ended with another defeat in the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares at Ascot on Saturday [Oct 15]. The 11-time G1 winner will stay in France to be covered by a European stallion next year.
The news was announced days after Addeybb, with whom Verry Elleegant tangled four times in Sydney, was also retired, bowing out with victory in a G2 at ParisLongchamp on Sunday [Oct 16].
Saudi Jockey Club awards jockey licence to first woman
Saudi Arabia: Amal bint Faisal has become the first woman to obtain a jockey licence and is qualified to ride in races at King Abdullaziz racecourse.
Coolmore stallion Caravaggio to relocate to Japan after sale
Japan: Caravaggio,top European first-season sire in 2021 but more recently based at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, will continue his stud career at Shizunai Stallion Station for the Japanese Bloodstock Breeders' Association.
