Who are the standout movers in the rankings after last week?

A look at some of the most notable movers in the TRC Global Rankings after last week’s action, which involved 18 Group or Graded races, just two of them G1s - the Prix de Diane at Chantilly in France on Sunday, and the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs in the U.S. later the same day.

 

The Laurens effect

The thrilling victory of Laurens in the Prix de Diane saw her connections make significant rankings gains: jockey P J McDonald (+6pts, #114 from #141), owner John Dance (+4pts, #119 from #183), trainer Karl Burke (+5pts, #38 from #39) and sire Siyouni (+3pts, #14 from #18).

Best performance of the week

Highest figure of the week (a Racing Post Rating of 118) was earned by Pavel in the Stephen Foster. He was ridden by Mario Gutierrez (+4pts, up to #111 from #126) and trained by Doug O’Neill (+3pts, #61 from #65).

Geroux and Ortiz riding high

There were riding doubles in the USA for Florent Geroux (+2pts, #13 from 14) and Jose Ortiz (+1pts, stays #8). Both Geroux’s wins came on the grass – a surface on which he is a master. Ortiz won won a G2 at Churchill Downs on on dirt and a G3 at Belmont on the grass.

Geroux teamed up with trainer Brad Cox (+4pts, #31 from #35) for his two wins. Cox, who has gained a total of 7pts in the last two weeks, now resides at a high watermark. Three years ago he was ranked #337 in the equivalent week.

Double lifts Barzalona

Jockey Mickael Barzalona (+3pts, #22 from #26) won two Group races on French Oaks day at Chantilly, the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil on Hunaina and the G2 Prix Hocquart on Nocturnal Fox. He has been ever present in the world’s top 50, with #19 his highest rank.

Galileo consolidates

A total of 18 different sires were responsible for the 18 Group and Graded winners. The highest-ranked of these was world #1 Galileo who produced G3 Munster Oaks winner Flattering, trained by #1 Aidan O’Brien. He was the only stallion in the world top seven with a winner.
