The Investec Derby Festival at Epsom was the standout fixture in world horse racing last week, closely followed by the Prix du Jockey Club meeting at Chantilly. But there was plenty of other top action around the globe. So who are the most notable movers in the latest edition of the TRC Global Rankings as a result?
Buick into the top ten
Jockey William Buick (+6pts, #10 from #12) entered the world’s top ten when winning the G3 Diomed Stakes and the G1 Derby, both at Epsom. Derby winner Masar is trained for Godolphin by Charlie Appleby (+2pts, stays at #5) and cemented the latter’s #1 ranking among British trainers.
Frankel climbs after his sixth G1
Frankel (+6pts, #4 from #5) leapfrogged Scat Daddy to retake the #4 slot among sires. The Juddmonte great had two top-level winners: Cracksman in the Coronation Cup at Epsom and Mozu Ascot in the one-mile Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo. Frankel has now sired six G1 winners and is an astonishing 27-137 (20 percent) in all ranking races.
It was another routinely brilliant week, meanwhile, for world #1 sire Galileo (+3pts, stays #1). The Coolmore leviathan produced three Group-race winners, notably G1 Investec Oaks winner Forever Together, trained by Aidan O'Brien (no gain, stays #1).
Deep Impact stays in position
Just a week after he sired the winner of the Japanese Derby, Deep Impact (+1pt, stays #3) bolstered his international resume when Study Of Man won the G1 Qipco Prix du Jockey Club, the de facto French Derby. This was another 2018 European classic for owners Niarchos Family (+4pts, #22 from #29) after Alpha Centauri in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
Study Of Man’s trainer, Pascal Bary, was another big mover, gaining seven points and climbing from #91 to 73, along with jockey Stephane Pasquier (+5pts, #44 from #48).
The week’s biggest climber
This week, a total of 33 races counted towards TRC Global Rankings and were won by 33 different trainers. Of these, South African handler Stuart Pettigrew (+11pts #216 from #380) makes the biggest leap for Surcharge’s win in the G1 Daily News 2000 at Greyville.
Peslier moves up
French maestro Olivier Peslier continues his march back up the rankings, earning eight points and climbing 11 places to #46 as a result of Finsbury Square’s win in the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene and Pollara’s in the G3 Prix de Royaumont, both at Chantilly.
Dettori closes on Mike Smith
Frankie Dettori (+3pts, stays #5) needed all his skill to get Cracksman home in the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom, but Wilamina’s win in the G3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at the same track was easier. The combination sees the Italian legend edge to within one point of world #4 Mike Smith (+1pt, stays #4), the current American #1.
Lemaire’s march goes on
From just two rides in Graded races, the Japan-based Frenchman Christophe Lemaire partnered Mozou Ascot to win the G1 Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo and Triomphe to finish second in the G3 Naruo Kinen at Hanshin. This gains him four points and bolsters his #6 world ranking,
Mixed fortunes for Rouget
Despite the disappointing run of favourite Olmedo in the Prix du Jockey Club, French trainer Jean-Claude Rouget - ranked second to only the great Andre Fabre in his country - began what could be a rankings revival when dispatching Mission Impassible to win the G2 Prix du Sandringham at Chantilly. He gains four points and moves up one slot to #16.
Siyouni making strides
Siyouni (+4pts, #19 from #21) - the sire responsible for G1 Saint-Alary winner Laurens just a week ago - made further strides with Finsbury Square’s win in the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene. He enters the world’s top 20 and could make further gains in a tightly packed group of stallions in the 10-20 range.
